“Macho Man” Randy Savage (November 15, 1952 – May 20, 2011)

I can’t believe it’s been a full year since Randy Savage died from a sudden heart attack. I was a fan of his growing up, but it was his time during WCW that really made me appreciate his ability as I was more of an active viewer of wrestling. As a kid, I had to beg my mom to pick up a random WWF VHS tape from the local video store, but in the late 90’s, cable ruled everything around me. Thank god for TNT and TBS for getting me into wrestling full-time.

Randy Savage’s presence is missed especially when it seemed that he was in the middle of patching things up with the WWE. He signed a deal with his former employers that allowed for using the “Macho Man” likeness for merchandising, so I was hoping that we’d eventually see him back in a WWE ring. Unfortunately, that never occurred.

Here’s the full write-up Vince McMahon gave to TIME magazine over the passing of Randy Savage:

“It’s important in sports and it’s important in entertainment to stand out. Randy knew that. Right away, he wanted to leave his mark, and to do that he was aware he had to make himself different from everyone else. One way he did this was concentrating on his outfits, those brightly colored costumes with foot-long fringe that became his trademark. He brought to wrestling a unique look and style.

“Randy, who died in a car crash May 20 at age 58, was one of the building blocks of what is now WWE (previously known as the World Wrestling Federation). He had a very unusual voice —remember his ‘Snap into a Slim Jim. Oh, yeah!’ commercials?—and was extremely charismatic.

“Perception is very important in this business, and he also had a very high opinion of himself, something he needed in a locker room full of performers who had been around for a while and had big personalities and followings—like Hulk Hogan, Today, Randy is remembered as one of wrestling’s all time greats. No question about it—he certainly was.”

R.I.P. Macho.

He was, and is, my favorite Professional wrestler of all time.  He personified what showmanship and guile meant. He used phraseology and physical prowess in a way that few can. The guy was a professional baseball player before he took to the squared circle. He was “the most sought after free agent in the world” before he signed with a “manager” in the WWF… And the manager he “signed with” was not a manager… she was his valet - and she was more that that… she was Miss Elizabeth.  Randy Poffo (Macho Man Randy Savage) was a hero, villain, champion and more than that, he was an icon.  Oooh yeah!
