There is plenty of discouraging news going around the NFL today, as more than 800 players were cut, placed on Injured Reserve(out for the year), or put on the PUP list(must miss a minimum of 6 games). That’s the bad news.
The good news? The inspirational story of New York Giants rookie, Mark Herzlich.
The 24 year old rookie linebacker was an All-American & the Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. He was a top 50 NFL prospect & potential 1st round pick. Despite a bright looking future, he decided to come back for another season of college ball, Then, in the Spring of ‘09, tragedy struck. Herzlich was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s sarcoma. He then battled through the treatments & returned to play last year.
Despite his illness, it was thought that Herzlich would still get selected in the ‘11 NFL Draft. It didn’t happen. Then, because of the offseason lockout, he remained without a team for months. Finally the NFL returned, the Giants signed him, giving him a shot to make the club in Training Camp.
The N.Y. Giants finalized their 53-man roster, today, with Mark Herzlich a member of it. He beat yet another challenge put before him in life. Of course he did. That’s what he does.
